4 Ways Diabetes Has Made Me a Better Person

When I was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2021, I’ll admit it felt like a curveball I hadn’t seen coming. But over time, this diagnosis has done more than just challenge me—it has made me a better person in ways I never anticipated. Here are the top three (plus one more) ways diabetes has enriched my life:

1. Increased Empathy for Others
Living with a chronic health condition has opened my eyes to the hidden battles so many people face. I’m more empathetic, patient, and understanding towards others dealing with their own health journeys. Diabetes has reminded me that we never truly know what someone else might be going through.

2. The Best My Diet Has Ever Been
I always prided myself on eating well, but since my diagnosis, I’ve levelled up my nutrition game. Following a clean, low-carbohydrate, nutrient-dense diet isn’t just about controlling my blood sugars—it’s about feeling my absolute best every day. This has taught me the value of fuelling my body in the right way.

3. Daily Movement is Non-Negotiable
Exercise has always been a passion of mine, but now it’s an essential part of my wellness toolkit. I make sure to move for at least 30 minutes every day, knowing it plays a crucial role in stabilising my blood sugars and boosting my overall wellbeing. This consistency has enhanced both my physical and mental health.

4. Sharing My Experience to Help Others
As a Diabetes Wellness Coach, my personal journey empowers me to support and guide others in their own health journeys. I know the struggles, the wins, and the mindset shifts needed to thrive with diabetes. Sharing these insights with my clients allows me to turn my experience into a source of empowerment for others.

So, while diabetes has certainly brought its challenges, it has also brought growth, connection, and purpose into my life. And for that, I’m truly grateful.
